Verdugo Homestead and Stage Stop with Photos

The Verdugo stage stop and school house are located on State Trust Land approximately 6 miles north of Picacho Peak and southeast of the Picacho Reservoir. The Verdugo Ranch stage stop served as a team change and watering station for the Picacho-Florence stage and wagon road that was abandoned after State Route 87 was built.

The history of this site was researched by site stewards Bill and Ellie Strader. Based on their research, R. C. Kerens of St. Louis (a frontier mail contractor) and W. M. Griffith (a Yuma resident) formed the Southern Pacific Mail Stage Line in 1877. The stage line served Tucson, Florence and the Globe mining areas from the railhead at Casa Grande. The Strader's were put in contact with the Southwest Archaeology Team (SWAT) to see if there was interest in stabilizing the badly eroded adobe structure. In February of 2001 members of the Southwest Archaeology Team and the Straders toured the site. SWAT stabilization specialists felt that the building could be saved from certain collapse. Approximately 250 adobe bricks were made to fill the voids in the eroded basal courses. In March of 2004 the roof was replaced with new rafters and tin. After some interior mud wall plastering and new window and door frames were put in place the building was considered restored and stable.

In 2005 SWAT received a Historic Preservation Heritage Fund Grant to replace the fallen roof of the school house. Work has started on the restoration of that building which is located across the road to the north of the stage stop/homestead.     Rain water running down the rafters to the walls have made large crevices which are being repaired by placing bricks across the voids to tie the two sides of the crevice together and then filling with adobe mortar.
