Save lots of money and avoid the refined oils and added sugars in store-bought pizza sauce. Whip up this easy, keto pizza sauce in just 3 minutes! Works for paleo, Whole30, Trim Healthy Mama, and gluten-free lifestyles, too!
I may have mentioned once or twice that I live in the middle of nowhere.
In the middle of nowhere, we have a cute, little, 100-year-old co-op store about four minutes from my house. In fact, I am on the board of directors of this little store.
And one of my objectives as a member of this board is to help introduce and stock organic foods in the store.
In the past few months, we have had some major victories. Our little co-op now carries severalorganic canned and frozen items, organic salsa, and even grass-fed ground beef and raw cheddar!
One thing we don’t have yet is organic pizza sauce.
And the other canned stuff?? Well, let’s just say that’s where my food snobbery kicks in. 😉
So when my family and I have a hankeringfor homemade pizza, it’s not like I can send The Hubs to the store to grab a can of pizza sauce. (This is our favorite canned brand — and yes, I pizza sauce is one thing that I’m ok with buying pre-made.)
I do always have organic tomato paste in the pantry, and I can whip up a quick and easy keto pizza sauce (yeah, in 3 minutes!) that’s pretty darn close to the canned stuff.
Why homemade, sugar-free pizza sauce?
I’m a big fan of the many healthy convenience foods you can find nowadays. And storebought pizza sauce is definitely one of those things that is convenient, and the ingredients usually aren’t that bad.
In health food store pizza sauces, there are still a couple of troublesome ingredients to watch for, however. Ingredients like refined vegetable oils and added sugar.
(I still don’t understand why foods with soybean and canola oils get to be sold at health food stores, but I digress.)
Besides, even if you do find a totally organic and sugar-free pizza sauce at the store, you’re going to fork over some cash for it.
This easy recipe takes just 3 minutes and costs so much less. In fact, I can often find cans of organic tomato paste for 99 cents. Add in the inexpensive spices and seasonings, and you’re paying less than $2 for pizza sauce!
I dare you to find it that inexpensively at the health food store!
Our family makes this pizza sauce again and again. We even make it when we aren’t having pizza.
It’s delicious just to dip things in — like breadsticks!
Now let’s make homemade pizza sauce in less time than it takes to drive to the store and grab some — and for a whole lot less moolah!
How To Make This Easy, 3-Minute, Sugar-Free Pizza Sauce
Open the can of tomato paste and put the paste in a medium-size bowl — like a cereal-size bowl is just fine.
Next, add the broth or water — just enough to get a thick, paste-y pizza sauce consistency. We don’t like watered down pizza sauce, but if you do, add more water or broth.
Last, add all the seasonings and whisk well until smooth.
Use it right away or store it in a jar until ready to use!

Ingredients
- 1 6-ozcan organic tomato paste
- 1/3 to 1/2cupwater or bone broth -- pretty cool way to get in some extra brothright?!
- 2teaspoonsdried oregano
- 2teaspoonsdried basil
- 1teaspoongarlic powder
- 1teaspoononion powder
- 1teaspoonsalt
- 1/2teaspoonpaprika
- 1/4teaspooncayenneoptional -- we like this for adult pizzas with spice!
- a few cranks of fresh black pepper
Instructions
Open the can or jar of tomato paste and scrape it into a small bowl.
Add water or broth (I use broth) and whisk to thin the paste into a sauce-like consistency.
I like a thick pizza sauce spread really thinly on the crust. You may like a thin sauce. Simply whisk in the water or broth until the tomato paste is to your desired saucy-ness. 🙂
Add the herbs and spices and whisk to incorporate.
That's it!
Recipe Notes
Makes enough sauce for two or three 10" pizzas.
