Renting a vehicle can be stressful, especially if you don't know what size you might need. Luckily, U-Haul has quite a few different truck sizes for you to use in whatever moving situation you might be in. These vehicles range in size and price, so it is important to know what you will be needing for your move. U-Haul has 6 different trucks for you to choose from:

• Pickup truck
• Cargo van
• 10’ truck
• 15’ truck
• 20’ truck
• 26’ truck

Note: They previously had a 24’ truck but it is no longer listed on their website, and after calling and speaking to them on the phone, they confirmed that they haven’t carried 24’ trucks for about 10 to 15 years.

U-Haul Trucks and Sizes

U-Haul Pickup Truck

The pickup truck will be just like any other pickup that you might see around town; it's great if you don’t have a whole lot of stuff to move (like appliances, beds, things of that nature) or if you’re moving into a smaller apartment.

Price: Starts at $19.95 plus $0.69 per mile

Pros:

• It can tow up to 6,000 pounds
• Has a 34-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 646 miles per tank of gas
• Has an 8-foot bed that can fit: a small load of boxes, wood, timber, other home improvement items

Features:

• A/C
• Automatic transmission
• Radio
• Seats up to 3 adults

Cons:

• The smallest of all the offered vehicles; limited on space
• The bed is open, so if it rains your stuff will get wet
• While it fits up to 3 adults, it is a tight fit

U-Haul Cargo Van

The cargo van is just like any other van out there. It can hold a queen-size bed with box springs. It is also great for deliveries; it has plenty of space for whatever you might be delivering, and it will keep your stuff safe.

Price: Starts at $19.95 plus $0.69 per mile

Pros:

• Has a 25-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 450 miles per tank of gas
• Deck length is 9'6"
• The volume of 245 cubic feet

Features:

• A/C
• Cruise control
• Can comfortably seat 2 people

Cons:

• Cannot tow
• Doesn’t have an EZ Load Ramp

U-Haul 10' Truck

The 10' truck is the most popular vehicle for single folks, students, and young couples moving into a small apartment together.

Price: Starts at $19.95 plus $0.79 per mile

Pros:

• Has a 31-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 372 miles per tank of gas
• Deck length of 9’11"
• The volume of 402 cubic feet
• Can fit a king-size bed

Features:

• Disc brakes (makes for better braking)
• A/C
• Seats 2 adults
• Automatic transmission

Cons:

• Does not have a "mom’s attic” (a safe place to store valuables and fragile things)
• Does not include an EZ Load Ramp

U-Haul 15’ Truck

The 15' truck is the second most popular rental U-Haul offers, and it offers more space for people moving into larger homes.

Price: Starts at $29.95 plus $0.79 per mile

Pros:

• Has a mom’s attic (to keep fragile items safe) of 2’6" x 7’8” x 2’7”
• Bigger mirrors to see what’s behind you
• It does have an EZ Load Ramp
• Can tow up to 10,000 lbs.
• Has a 40-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 400 miles per tank of gas

Features:

• Can seat 3 people
• Disc brakes
• A/C

Cons:

• While it seats 3 people, it will be cramped
• Fuel mileage is awful for a longer move

U-Haul 20’ Truck

The 20' truck is intended for moving into larger homes and can comfortably fit 3 people in the cab. This truck is also great for longer hauls where you’re moving out of town or even out of state.

Price: Starts at $39.95 plus $0.79 per mile

Pros:

• Has a 40-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 400 miles per tank of gas
• The volume of 1,016 cubic feet
• Has an EZ Load Deck
• Has a Mom’s Attic the size of 2’6" x 7’8” x 2’7”

Features:

Cons:

• Can only tow up to 7,500 pounds
• Mom’s Attic is the same size as the 15’ truck
• Fuel economy is not super great at 10 MPG

U-Haul 26' Truck

The final truck that U-Haul offers is their 26' truck, designed for big moves. This is the truck for you if you have a large home and need to move across town or across the country.

Price: Starts at $39.95 plus $0.79 per mile

Pros:

• Has a 60-gallon fuel tank and can go up to 600 miles per tank of gas
• Mom’s attic is largest offered at 2'8" x 8'2" x 3'3"
• Has an EZ Load Ramp

• Can seat 3 comfortably
• Disc brakes
• A/C
• Automatic transmission

Cons:

• MPG is only 10, so it eats a lot of gas
• Towing capacity is only 7,500 lbs.

What Size U-Haul Do You Need?

Still unsure of what size truck you might need during your move? With so many options to choose from you might have a tough time narrowing down your options to find the perfect truck for your move. Here are a few things to look at before your move to help narrow down your options:

1. How many rooms am I moving and how much am I moving?

Are you moving a 4-bedroom home with a bunch of stuff? Then the 26-foot truck might be your best bet. Are you moving a small studio apartment with next to nothing? Then you might want to go with the pickup truck or the cargo van.

Keep in mind that the more bedrooms you move, the bigger the vehicle you will need. That’s why we included the number of rooms being moved for each vehicle so you have an idea of what will work best for you.

2. Will I need a trailer, and if so, what am I towing?

While most of the trucks offer hitches, the cargo van does not. So, if you need a trailer for whatever then automatically the cargo van is out of the running. Also, keep in mind the towing capacity for each vehicle.

If your trailer is heavier than what that vehicle is rated for, you will run into issues. So, choose your vehicle based on your towing needs. Remember that U-Haul also offers a bunch of trailer options, so you don’t necessarily have to have your own trailer.

3. How far am I moving?

This is an important question because it ultimately should determine the size of your vehicle. If you’re staying in town, then theoretically if you got a smaller truck you could make multiple trips (although I wouldn’t recommend it since you’re paying for gas and miles).

If you are moving across the state or across the country, then you will absolutely need to make sure your vehicle is large enough for everything you have, and you absolutely won’t have to make multiple trips. Also, keep gas mileage in mind.

4. What am I comfortable driving?

One major point that you may not think about is this; are you comfortable driving a larger truck? Those bigger U-Haul trucks are not the easiest to drive, and if you have driven a small compact car your whole life the idea of suddenly driving a 26’ truck might be terrifying to you.

If so, we would recommend driving one of the smaller vehicles, like the pickup or the cargo van.
