Terminal Norte
Directed by Lucrecia Martel
Synopsis
During the 2020 lockdown, Lucrecia Martel returns to her home in Salta, Argentina’s most conservative region. Here she follows Julieta Laso who, like a muse, introduces her to a group of female artists and defiant people who exchange glances and opinions around a fire.

This is what you'd get if MUBI were asked to produce the tiny desk concerts.

Turning to the grounding powers of nature and artistic solidarity, Lucrecia Martel’s documentary short carves a soulful reprieve from the uncertainties of the outside world. Vibrating through the woodlands of Salta, songs of freedom and resistance create a sonic haven against conservative doctrines.
Now showing (almost) globally here.

Just thrilling. A four day gathering of women in the north of Argentina, pushing back at the region's conservatism with both their songs and their very existence. Singing about sex workers, and desire, and being trans — and always, regardless of genre or singer, pushing forward: reminding themselves and one another to keep moving; not to give in to a world that desires both their bodies and their silence.
It feels like a glimpse into the secret hearts of women.
When an older coplera sings about wishing she had two husbands, one for every day, and one for "every once in a while." When a young trap artist sings about overcoming hurt and mistakes and leaving it all behind, with…

Terminal Norte (2021). A celebration of artistic solidarity, rhythmic resistance, and melodic protests. Music ties people together, and it can be a vehicle of counterculture: to be defiant and perceptive. Short but needed more insight, honestly.

Review by Julian (Seeking Film) ★★★
Pandemic productions are only really intriguing insofar as the conditions of their assemblage will someday offer some historical contrast against the much better works that will be produced with some semblance of hindsight towards the period. In that vein, North Terminal isn't so much starting with an A+ premise and working its way backward through alienating presentation as with most of Lucrecia Martel's work, so much as it is already working at the disadvantage of feeling so scattershot and cobbled-together by the very virtue of its existence. At the absolute least, we can commend her for not conveying the isolation of her artistry by just (torturing us in) remaking La Cienaga through a COVID lens, which would presumably have been…
