This is a complete list of all gear sets available in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Each set is accompanied by its individual guide showing you how to get the items, crafting and level requirements and in what situations these gear sets are most useful.
This guide is up-to-date for The Witcher 3 Next-Gen version (Update 4.04)
Definition of a Gear Set in The Witcher 3
In The Witcher 3, a gear set is defined primarily by the uniqueness of the items and the fact that the developers of the game designed them to be worn together as an outfit, as an ensemble, as a set.
There are two major types of gear sets in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt and its two expansions: Witcher Gear and non-Witcher gear.
The highest tiers of the Witcher gear sets have unique set bonuses, which you can unlock if you wear three or six of the items of the same set.
In any other case the definition of a “gear set” is exhausted by the fact that all items have similar designs and they look as if made to be worn together.
During your adventures in The Witcher 3, you will wear almost exclusively witcher Armor and wield witcher swords. You could use any other piece of gear you find, of course, but the witcher sets are the most optimized ones for your levels and you can find them often enough so that when one set becomes obsolete and weak, an upgrade for it becomes available for you to craft and wear.
Witcher Sets
There are four Witcher Schools represented in the base game with unique gear sets: Wolf, Griffin, Beat and Cat. Two additional ones are available in the two expansions. The full Viper set is part of the Hearts of Stone expansion and the Manticore set is available in Toussaint, part of the Blood and Wine Expansion.
Each Witcher gear set, except for the Viper and Manticore, has five tiers with the highest, Grandmaster, being accessible only if you own Blood and Wine.

Other Gear Sets
There are a few other full sets available in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. However, while they are great as outfits and provide decent stats boosts if equipped at the appropriate level, they are not witcher sets and do not have set bonuses.
Thousand Flowers Gear set
The Thousand Flowers Gear set was added to the game with the release of the Next-Gen update. It is medium armor and requires level 7 to wear.

In southern Velen, in the House of Respite, you can find the true Nilfgaardian armor and helmet. And, if you so desire, change its appearance to the version from The Witcher’s first season on Netflix.
Tesham Mutna Gear Set
The Tesham Mutna set is only accessible if you own Blood and Wine. During the main story quest “La Cage au Fou”, after you deal with the Wigth, you explore Tesham Mutna’s ruins with Regis. This is when and where you can get the Tesham Mutna gear pieces.
Hen Gaidth Armor Set
The Hen Gaidth is a unique heavy armor set consisting of five armor pieces all available for looting during the main quest “What Lies Unseen” from the Blood and Wine story: Mask, Chest, Gloves, Trousers, and Boots. This quest is available if you choose the path that leads to the Unseen Elder vampire.
This armor set will help you greatly in your final encounter with Dettlaff (if you choose to fight him). The armor provides high resistance to damage from monsters, piercing, bludgeoning, bleeding, and slashing.
Also, if you have ever wanted to look like Count Dracula, this is likely your best choice of armor!
Undvik Armor Set
The Undvik Set is a heavy armor, added to the base game with one of the many free DLCs CD Projekt RED released after the launch of The Witcher 3. You can simply go to Skellige and purchase it from the Armorer at Kaer Trolde. The entire set also features accessories for Roach.
There are more unofficial sets that you can pile up together by looting them as random drops or purchasing them from merchants. They are not really gear sets in the same sense as the ones presented in this guide. In time, we may add them as well, just to have this catalog even more complete than it is now.
Which Gear Set is The Best
The witcher gear sets are the best sets you should wear while leveling. As soon as you cover the level requirements, craft and equip your new set or upgrade your existing one.
Each set has its own perks and quirks. The Ursine is the typical “sword first” heavy armor type of set. It’s suitable for players who want to swing and feel well protected at the same time.
On the other hand, the Griffin set is good if you want to play a sing build. The Manticore set boosts greatly your bombs and if you want to throw exploding things in the faces of monsters and bad guys, this is the set for you.
Every one of the witcher sets fits nicely into a style of play and looking into the stats that you get (mainly) from the armor and swords, you can tell what playstyle that gear set promotes and is designed for.
The non-witcher gear sets are more of a fashion statement, not always a good upgrade compared to what you are currently wearing.
While leveling up, especially in the early game, you should equip whatever the highest witcher gear you have access to. Around the time you start to get more Skill Points and are able to start properly building out your Geralt, you should start considering investing in one line of witcher gear and upgrade it to its maximum tier.
This happens usually around Tier 3 (Superior). Tier 4 Mastercrafted and the highest tier Grandmaster, are actually quite expensive to craft, so it is unlikely you would want to make more than one set. Unless you are a mad collector like me, and you want to have them all!
If you like the appearance of one set or item but have to wear another for its stats, there is a solution to that: Transmog. We have a detailed guide on how to install and set up a mod to allow Transmog in The Witcher 3. This feature is not natively supported by the game, but CD Projekt Red actively promotes and supports the modding community.
