You simply apply to the university and you will be evaluated for scholarships based on the holistic review. These scholarships are highly competitive and only roughly 7% of incoming students will receive a scholarship not based on financial need.

Ranked as Kiplinger's Best-Value Public College for the eighteenth time in 2019. At Carolina, 74% of all undergraduates apply for aid and 62% of applicants receive some form of need-based financial aid. The average need-based scholarship or grant award for 2021-2022 is $14,910.

Both Duke and UNC have highly competitive admissions rates, though Duke is definitely the harder school to get into. The UNC Chapel Hill acceptance rate is around 17%, with an early acceptance rate of around 21.9%. The average SAT scores are between 1350 and 1530, while the average ACT scores fall between 30 and 34.

UNC Chapel Hill does have a prominent preference for in-state students. State law mandates that at around 80% of each freshman class must be composed of North Carolina residents, so this usually reflects in the acceptance rates. On average, the acceptance rate for in-state students is about 45%.

You should also have a 4 GPA or higher. If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score. For a school as selective as UNC, you'll also need to impress them with the rest of your application.
