Dogs in the Southwest Archaeological Record

Dogs appear in southwestern archaeological contexts as buried animals, as occasional food remains, and as inferred working partners, but the evidence is uneven and each class of find is read differently.

Dogs appear in southwestern archaeological contexts as buried animals, as occasional food remains, and as inferred working partners, but the evidence is uneven and each class of find is read differently. Direct evidence comes from burials, coprolites, gnawed bone, and rock art; indirect evidence comes from ethnographic analogy and from the biology of herding behavior studied in living dogs, a subject treated in detail by the herding instinct institute. No single line of evidence carries the argument alone.

What does a dog burial actually show?

A dog burial is the clearest trace, and also the most overread. In the northern Southwest, dogs are found interred under room floors, in plaza corners, and occasionally in midden deposits. Basketmaker II and III cave sites in the Four Corners produce some of the earliest examples, often complete and articulated, sometimes with a mano or a few maize kernels. Pueblo period burials at Chaco Canyon and in the Rio Grande valley repeat the pattern: a single animal, placed on its side or back, in a pit that was then sealed.

What this shows is deliberate disposal. It does not automatically show affection, sacrifice, or a named individual. Archaeologists distinguish among several possibilities: a household animal buried at death, a foundation or dedication deposit, a hunting or herding partner interred with intent, or simply a carcass placed where trash went. Context does the work. A dog under a sealed floor with no other refuse reads differently from a dog in a midden lens with butchered sheep and broken pottery.

Age and pathology matter as much as placement. Tooth wear, healed fractures, and joint disease indicate an animal that lived long enough to work or to be fed. A puppy in a pit is a different statement than a ten-year-old with worn carnassials.

How are working roles inferred?

Working roles are inferred, not observed. The archaeological record does not preserve a dog herding sheep. What it preserves is a set of conditions under which herding or hunting assistance is plausible, and a set of biological facts about what dogs can do.

Three lines of argument are used. First, the presence of domestic dogs alongside domestic livestock. Navajo and Pueblo sheep and goat herds after the sixteenth century were managed with dogs, and historic-period sites in the Rio Grande and on the Colorado Plateau contain both dog and caprine remains. Second, rock art. Petroglyphs in the Rio Grande gorge and on the Colorado Plateau show dogs in profile, sometimes behind human figures and sometimes near animals that may be sheep, deer, or antelope. Third, ethnographic accounts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which describe dogs used in hunting, in guarding, and in moving stock.

The biological side of the argument is less often stated but matters. Herding behavior in dogs is not a single trait. It involves gathering versus driving, a balance point relative to the handler, a flight zone around the stock, and the sustained eye that Border Collies and some Kelpies show. For the archaeologist, the point is that a dog capable of moving stock is a dog with a specific behavioral profile, and that profile has a genetic and developmental basis. It is not something a bone can confirm, but it is something a bone does not rule out.

What do coprolites and gnawed bone add?

Coprolites, desiccated feces from dry caves, are among the most direct sources of dietary evidence. Analysis of dog coprolites from Basketmaker and Pueblo contexts in Arizona and New Mexico has shown maize, squash, small mammal bone, and occasionally human-derived food waste. This indicates dogs eating what people ate, or eating people's scraps, which is a form of dependence.

Gnawed bone is the other side of the same coin. Rodent and lagomorph bones in southwestern sites frequently carry carnivore tooth marks. Some of these marks are from dogs, some from coyotes, and distinguishing them requires size and spacing measurements of the punctures and scores. Where dog gnawing is identified on bones that also show human butchery, the sequence can sometimes be reconstructed: who chewed first, who cut after.

Both classes of evidence are indirect. They show that dogs were present, fed, and active around human food. They do not show what the dogs were doing during the day.

Were dogs eaten?

Sometimes, yes, and the evidence should be stated plainly. Cut marks and burning on dog bones occur at a small number of southwestern sites, mostly in the northern Southwest and mostly in contexts dated to the late Basketmaker and early Pueblo periods. The frequency is low. In most assemblages, dog remains show no butchery at all.

The interpretation is contested. Some researchers read the cut marks as evidence of famine or of ritual consumption. Others read them as taphonomic noise: a dog that died, was scavenged, and whose bones were later exposed to fire. The honest position is that both are possible at different sites, and that the number of securely identified cases is small enough that no single explanation covers them.

How is the evidence dated and sourced?

Dating dog remains relies on the same methods used for other southwestern material. Radiocarbon dating on bone collagen is standard, and it has been used to place dog burials at Chaco Canyon and in the Four Corners within specific centuries. Associated ceramics and stratigraphy provide relative dates where radiocarbon is unavailable.

Isotopic analysis adds a second dimension. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes in dog bone collagen reflect diet, and dogs fed maize show a distinct signal from dogs eating wild game. This has been used to argue for dog diets tied closely to human agricultural produce, and by extension for dogs living within human households rather than on the periphery.

A note on sources: much of the primary literature sits in regional journals and site reports, not in general-audience publications. The Museum of Northern Arizona and the Arizona State Museum both maintain research collections and published site reports that are accessible to serious readers.

What should a visitor look for?

A visitor to a southwestern site will not see dog burials in situ. Excavated dog remains are in museum collections, and the field contexts are backfilled. What a visitor can see is rock art, and dogs appear in petroglyph panels at several locations on the Colorado Plateau and in the Rio Grande valley. Look for a small quadruped in profile, often with a curled tail, sometimes following a human figure.

Museum displays at the Arizona State Museum in Tucson and at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff include dog remains and interpretive material. The labels are worth reading closely: they tend to distinguish what is known from what is inferred, which is the correct posture for this subject.

The larger point is that dogs in the southwestern past are visible mainly through the traces they left in human spaces: under floors, in middens, in the gnaw marks on bones that people also butchered. Reading those traces requires the same care as reading a great house or a cliff dwelling, and the same willingness to leave some questions open.
