Field methods before a first season

What should a beginner read before a first season?

Start with a single general manual and finish it. Read it once for the shape of the work, then keep it as a reference. Two other categories are worth the time: the site report for the region you are joining, and the local culture history, because you will be asked to identify ceramics or lithics you have never seen.

Regional literature matters more than most beginners expect. If you are going to the Southwest, read a site report from the same drainage or the same period. If you are going to the Midwest, read a report from a comparable open-air site. The point is not to memorize types but to recognize the vocabulary your supervisor will use on the first morning.

Practical study habits carry over directly. A field notebook is a record kept under time pressure, and the same discipline that makes lecture notes usable makes site notes usable: a consistent format, a date and location on every page, and a summary written the same day while the memory is fresh. Recording. Set up a notebook page format before you leave home. Date, site number, unit, level, excavator, and a sketch box. Write a practice entry for a fictional unit, then write another one the next day from memory. The second entry will show you what you failed to record.

Soil and sediment description. Learn the basic terms: texture, color, compaction, inclusions, and boundaries. Munsell color notation is standard in most projects, and a beginner who can say "10YR 4/3 sandy loam" instead of "brown dirt" saves the supervisor a conversation. Practise on a road cut, a garden bed, or a riverbank. Describe ten different exposures in writing.

A fourth skill is physical: carry a loaded bucket, kneel for an hour, and screen in the sun. Fieldwork is not strenuous in the way that hiking is strenuous, but it is repetitive, and the body notices.

What does the first week on site actually look like?

The first days are usually orientation, not excavation. Expect a tour of the site, a review of safety and emergency procedures, instruction on the recording system, and practice with the total station or dumpy level. Many projects run a small test unit or a shovel test before opening larger areas, and beginners are often assigned to screening, hauling, or note taking before they are assigned to trowel work.

A typical day starts early, often before the heat, and ends with paperwork. The rhythm is: set up, excavate or survey, record, screen, bag, and write. The writing is not optional and it is not brief. Budget an hour at the end of the day for notes, bag labels, and level forms.

Expect to be corrected. Expect to ask the same question twice. Expect the first unit you dig to be slower than you imagined, because the goal is a controlled record, not a hole. A one-by-one meter unit excavated in ten-centimeter levels can take days, and that is normal.

How should a beginner prepare logistically?

Read the project's equipment list and follow it. Boots with ankle support, leather gloves, a hat, long sleeves, and two water bottles are standard. A trowel, a line level, a metric tape, and a permanent marker are common personal items; the project usually supplies the rest.

Arrange housing, transport, and food before the season starts, and confirm whether the project provides them. Field housing is often shared and remote, which means laundry, internet, and quiet are limited. What should a beginner expect to learn, and what not to expect?

By the end of a first season, a beginner can usually excavate a level with clean walls and a flat floor, fill out the standard forms without help, identify the common artifacts of the region, and describe a soil profile in accepted terms. Those are real skills and they transfer.

What a first season will not produce is expertise. Identification of ceramics, lithics, and faunal material takes years of comparative work. Interpretation takes longer. A beginner who leaves with a well-kept notebook, a set of measured drawings, and a clear sense of how a site is recorded has done the job.

The most useful habit to carry away is the one the field teaches directly: write it down the day it happens, in a form someone else can read. That habit is the same one that makes coursework manageable, and it is the reason a field season often improves a student's academic work rather than interrupting it.
